Duinengordel - yellow - 15,4 km
This long hike introduces you to the continental dune 'Oudsberg' and the Commanderij Gruitrode.
Extensive description CloseIn the Hoge Kempen National Park, 10 walking routes have been awarded the European quality label Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe, Day Walk, presented by the European Hiking Federation. These Top Trails meet strict quality requirements in terms of landscape variety, presence of natural and cultural values, signposting and infrastructure.
One of these places is the Commanderij Gruitrode. Until 1801, the Commanderij Gruitrode was one of the twelve commanderies of the Teutonic Order that were subordinate to the land commander of Alden Biesen. The Commanderij consisted of a castle separated by moats and a square farmstead.
The Commanderij Gruitrode is currently being restored in phases to become a hotspot for culture and events. In addition, the site will serve as a gateway to the Dune Belt, helping visitors find their way around this northern part of the Hoge Kempen National Park.
The Oudsberg is a land dune that rises 30 to 40 metres above the Kempen Plateau and is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forests. To reach the top, you have to climb a little, but it is well worth the effort. At the top, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Dune Belt. If you look south, you can see the southern part of the Hoge Kempen National Park on the other side of the Bosbeek Valley.
