Weerterbos - Hugterheide - yellow - 8,9 km
The hiking area Weerterbos and Hughterheide is located in the north of the KempenBroek. This yellow route takes you not only along the central part of the Weerterbos but also through the Hughterheide.
Extensive description CloseIt is a varied area with old, moist deciduous woodlands, beautiful ponds, and small heathland areas. The Weerterbos has gained a lot of recognition in recent years due to the presence of red deer. In the autumn, it attracts many enthusiasts who want to catch a glimpse of the spectacular rutting season. Here you will find an impressive observation tower from which you can spot the animals in the area.
However, the area has much more to offer! The woodland has its charms in every season, and anyone searching for the sounds of the Yellowhammer, Crested Tit, or Nuthatch will never be bored. You also hike past pingo ruins and lynchets. Be sure to visit the border chapel where Catholics used to secretly attend mass. On the western side, the Weerterbos is flanked by dry woodlands of the Hugterheide. Here and there you still hike along a patch of heathland.
More information about the hiking area can be found on the hiking map of the area.
