Mechelse Heide - purple - 12,5 km
A vigorous, woodland hiking route that takes you through the Mechels Bos past the old station of Eisden and along the steep edge of the Kempens Plateau. But you also get to experience the vast heathland.
Extensive description CloseIn the Hoge Kempen National Park, 10 walking routes have been awarded the European quality label Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe, Day Walk, presented by the European Hiking Federation. These Top Trails meet strict quality requirements in terms of landscape variety, natural and cultural values, signage and infrastructure.
One of these quality routes takes you past the small station of Eisden, the former terminus of the Coal Railway. The last coal train departed from here in 1987, after passenger traffic had already been discontinued. The original wooden station building burned down completely but was later rebuilt as a tavern. The old station outbuildings were also given a new lease of life and converted into charming hikers' cabins.
Please note: this route has been modified. If you have a map from before 2025, the route on the ground will no longer correspond to the map.
