Mechelse Heide - blue - 4,9 km
The blue hiking route leads you to the highest natural point of the Nationaal Park: a viewpoint where you have beautiful panoramic views. You do have to hike up quite a bit.
Extensive description CloseAt the vantage point, you are located 104m above sea level and enjoy a beautiful view over the Maasvallei and the Hoge Kempen.
Then you continue hiking through the heathland and have a nice view of the former sand quarry.
The hike also leads you past the Ven under the Berg: this ven is almost completely covered with peat mosses. These retain water like a sponge. While it dies off at the bottom, it continues to grow at the top. The dead peat moss forms a peat layer and is the growth place of very special plants. This peat moss carpet has taken tens of thousands of years to become what it is today. It is also very fragile: walking on it can leave traces for years.
