Stokkem - red - 13,5 km
The red hiking loop is a versatile hike through a typical landscape along the Maas. You will see old arms of the Maas, the winterdike, old gravel pits, the floodplains, and above all many typical herbs and birds.
Extensive description CloseVia the red hiking route, you get to know the Oude Maas in Dilsen, here lies an old branch of the Maas. The Maas has gradually shifted its banks further east. The unique nature reserve Negenoord - Kerkeweerd is also located on this route. This former Maas floodplain has been transformed through gravel extraction into a lake area surrounded by ecologically rich banks and a colorful, herb-rich mosaic landscape of grasslands and willow woods. It is a beautiful place for countless water birds, but the beaver also feels at home here.
Further along the route, you will also discover the hamlet of Boyen. Due to its location so close to the Maas, the residents here have faced high tides several times. Several flood marks on the dike and houses show how far the water reached.
Be sure to take the time to visit the Visitor Center De Wissen. A free exhibition about the Maas in all its aspects tells you more about what you can see in the surrounding countryside. On the top floor of the Visitor Center, you get a beautiful view over Negenoord – Kerkeweerd.
