Stokkem - blue - 4,6 km
The blue loop of the hiking area Stokkem tells the story of the Oude Maas, one of the most striking old Maas meanders in the Maasvallei.
Extensive description CloseWith this route, you hike along an old cut-off branch of the Maas. If you pay close attention, you will notice that you are also walking over an old Maas dike. It no longer serves a water-retaining function but, due to its thorny vegetation, provides shelter for many birds. In Oud-Dilsen, you will find Mariapark, definitely worth a short stop. This small park is an oasis of peace in a historic setting. The old tower and the Marian grotto take you briefly back in time. Oud-Dilsen is also the birthplace of one of the wines from the Protected Designation of Origin ‘Maasvallei Limburg’. At Wijndomein Thilesna, guided tours are available upon request and you can taste this regional product.
The charming hamlet of Boyen lies here on the edge of the riverbed. You can see how the winding rain river has shifted the Maas’s course over the centuries and cloaked the area in beautiful greenery. In the meadows of Boyen, natural grazing is practiced in cooperation with local farmers.
