Station As - yellow - 11,6 km
This 11.5 km hiking route takes you from the gateway Station As past the geological wall, the woodland and heathland area Driebanken, the Theunissenmolen, and the Bosbeek.
Extensive description CloseThe woodland and heathland area between Station As and the geological wall is very diverse. In the middle lies a heathland remnant, the favored habitat of the viviparous lizard.
The geological wall, located in a former quarry, offers you a view of the formation history of the Hoge Kempen. Via an 8.5-meter-high stairway tower, you can view the wall at various levels. At the top, you stand at the original level, before there was a quarry.
The hike leads you to the Bosbeekvallei. The Bosbeek springs at the border of As and Genk. Over a distance of 2.5 km, it forms the border between As and Opglabbeek, a sub-municipality of Oudsbergen. Afterwards, the Bosbeek flows through Opoeteren and Neeroeteren to discharge into the Maas at Aldeneik (near Maaseik). The Bosbeek has a significant fall, which made it especially suitable for watermills. The Theunissenmolen is one of the 12 mills on the Bosbeek.
