After a short downhill approach, you hike to the nature reserve of the Mombeekvallei. In winter or after heavy rain, the paths can be slippery and muddy. Sturdy footwear or boots are recommended.
Extensive description CloseThe Mombeek forms the winding border between Alken and Hasselt. At the deepest point of the valley, the old Mombeek flows parallel to its larger counterpart. The wetter nature of this valley has historically made it difficult to access. Houses could not be built there, and modern agriculture also left the valley as it was. Today, it is a blue-green oasis in the fertile Haspengouw field and meadow landscape.
