Mombeekvallei - red arrow - 7,1 km
From Alken, you hike along the small Herk, through the Bengelbeemd to the nature reserve of the Mombeekvallei. In winter or after heavy rain, the paths can be slippery and muddy. Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended.
Extensive description CloseThe Mombeek forms the winding border between Alken and Hasselt. At the deepest point of the valley, the old Mombeek flows parallel to its larger counterpart. The wetter nature of this valley has traditionally made it difficult to access. You couldn't build houses there, and modern agriculture also left the valley untouched. Today, it is a blue-green oasis in the fertile Haspengouw field and meadow landscape.
Due to construction work in the center of Alken, the starting point of this hike has been temporarily moved to Grootstraat at the path leading to Bengelbeemd. Parking is available at the Carrefour parking lot.
