Extensive description Close

The Abeek originates in the Hoge Kempen on the military domain in Oudsbergen. It is naturally a typical lowland stream. It is fed by several springs (seepage) present throughout almost the entire upper and middle course. This spring water is rich in iron and colors the seepage zones, where the water reaches the surface, rusty brown. The stream has a fairly intact structure from the source to the lower course, with beautiful meanders and hollow banks. The water is of good quality, which supports a great diversity of plants and animals.
More than 215 ha are managed by Natuurpunt in the nature reserve Vallei van de Abeek. A small herd of Galloways helps manage this area. This small cattle breed is perfectly suited for this kind of work. They require little maintenance, and their dense coat provides good protection against weather and wind.
