The thick layers of clay in the soil you will hike over allow rainwater to hardly seep into the ground. It then chooses another path and flows more or less horizontally over the clay layers. On the slopes of the Wijngaardbos, these clay layers even appear at the surface. The water comes up here and forms numerous springs. There are so many of them that it is also called a 'spring forest.' All these springs together form the beginning of the Demer, and because they are so rich in lime, they attract a unique plant growth.
