Thorpark - yellow - 16,0 km
This long hike is the 'super' hike of the hiking trail network Thorpark. Not only in terms of length but also in terms of landscape variety.
Extensive description CloseIn the Hoge Kempen National Park, 10 walking routes have been awarded the European quality label Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe, Day Walk, presented by the European Hiking Federation. These Top Trails meet strict quality requirements in terms of landscape variety, natural and cultural values, signage and infrastructure.
Thorpark also fits in seamlessly with this. This 10 km² area, located behind the former Waterschei mine, has so many qualities that it will fit in with the National Park. You will find everything the Hoge Kempen has to offer: mine slag heaps surrounded by heathland and pine forests, a beautiful stream valley, juniper berries and inland dunes. A few striking buildings dot the landscape, such as the children's colony of As and the Waterschei coal mine (Thor Central). You can already enjoy extensive walks here, and the brand-new entrance gate has recently been opened.
Please note: this route has been modified. If you have a map from before 2025, the route on the ground will no longer correspond to the map.
