Behind the former mine of Waterschei (Genk) lies this impressive area. Within 10 km² you will find almost everything that characterizes the Hoge Kempen: mining spoil heaps amidst heathlands and pine woodlands, a stream valley (Stiemerbeek), juniper scrub (Heiderbos), and continental dunes (Klaverberg). Striking buildings spice up the landscape: from the former children’s colony in As, to the coal mine of Waterschei, or the mining cathedral of Zwartberg. The area includes 11 hiking routes ranging from 2 to 16 km, which can of course be combined with the convenient hiking switch system. Tip: also discover the Top Trail Thorpark, the yellow route of 16 km.
