Stramproy - Tungelroy - purple - 6,9 km
In the hiking area Stramproy-Tungelroy, you will find a varied landscape, old buildings, chapels, and wayside crosses. Through the charming village of Stramproy, this hike takes you to the Tungelroyse Beek.
Extensive description CloseYou sometimes hike right next to the stream and then again a bit further away. Via the Linjer Brökske you return to the center of Stramproy; the route was previously called Ommetje Linjer Brökske. You pass several crossroads, mill De Nijs, and the Sint Jansmolen, the oldest authentic windmill in Weert. References to the existence of this windmill date back even to the 16th century. You also pass the reconstruction of the Roman Bridge over the Tungelroyse Beek. The bridge from 27 AD was originally built over the narrowest part of the stream. It was reconstructed a little further on some time ago to avoid damaging the original remains in the ground. You also hike along part of the Tungelerwallen, a dry area with a lot of drifting sand. These Tungelerwallen would never have existed without human intervention. Just like the other drifting sand areas in the KempenBroek, the initial steps for these landscapes were already taken before our era. During the Bronze Age, pieces of woodland were set on fire using the then-common slash-and-burn method to use the land as a field for several years. These fields were abandoned after a few years when the soil was depleted and the exposed sandy ground began to drift.
