This medium-length hike takes you through the woodlands of the Hei- en Meibos. In the Papendaalheide area, former gravel pits, you can enjoy a beautiful vantage point over the water.

Extensive description Close

This medium-length hike takes you through the Meibos, whose name refers to the cultivation of the dye plant madder, known in the Genk dialect as 'Meykoel'. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, madder was extensively cultivated here. The roots of this plant formed the raw material for the production of red dye. At its peak, there were no fewer than 34 hectares of madder fields in the area. You will also pass several ponds that have formed due to former industrial extraction of sand and gravel. During your hike, you will discover not only beautiful nature but also a piece of history.
