Elen - yellow - 7,3 km
The yellow loop in the hiking area Elen is a beautiful hike from the RivierPark Maasvallei to the nearby KempenBroek. If you pay close attention, you can see that the landscape, the soil, and also the plants take on different characteristics.
Extensive description CloseYou start your hike at the church in Elen. From there, you get to know the rural character of this charming Maas village. Here you will still find several typical Maaslandse farmsteads. The fields and fields with numerous small landscape features form the setting for this relaxing hike.
Once you have crossed the Rijksweg, you will gradually see the landscape change. Here you also discover Sipernau Castle, which has been mentioned since the 8th century (then a farmstead). The castle is privately owned, but you can visit the chapel of Saint Rita. Be sure to take a look; the interior is truly beautiful.
Finally, the hike also takes you to De Broeken, a special nature reserve formed through peat extraction. In this nature reserve, you will find a very diverse plant life. The alternation between deep and shallow water allows marsh plants to thrive alongside heathland. Several bird species are also fond of this area, such as the coot, the grey heron, and the cuckoo. A bird hide gives birdwatchers the chance to admire these unique species, but you can already see quite a lot from the boardwalk.
