Dorplein - Boshoverheide - green - 2,8 km
Budel-Dorplein is a factory village that was built at the end of the 19th century near the zinc factory. This route starts from De Schakel and runs around the former sand extraction pond in an area with mixed woodland.
Extensive description CloseThe village was designed by Emiel Dor in the same Walloon architectural style as in the Belgian Borinage. It was recognized as a ‘protected village view’ and has remained largely authentic. The Loozerheide, between Weert and Budel-Dorplein, which is also part of this hiking area, was originally a largely wet area with humid heathland and ponds. Over the centuries, the area was drained to make it suitable for agriculture. ARK Rewilding Netherlands and Natuurmonumenten jointly ensured that it became a wet nature area again. The Loozerheide is grazed by Exmoor ponies and cattle. They create a great variety of tall and low vegetation. Boshoverheide, on the other hand, is a dry area consisting of drifting sands, coniferous forests, and dry heathland. Very unique is that here you find the largest roman burial mound field in Northwest Europe.
