The Steam Toffee Factory
Rullingen
Haspengouw
Although syrup had been made in Haspengouw households since the 18th century, real factories with staff and machines only appeared from 1880 onwards. The industry flourished especially in Borgloon, causing the local population to quickly earn the nickname 'strooplekkers' (syrup lickers). Syrup remained extremely popular until the mid-20th century. In 2017, the municipality of Borgloon began restoring the steam syrup factory, which was transformed into a fruit experience center.
