Pietersheim - red - 11,2 km
From Pietersheim, you discover the dense pine woodlands, old beech avenues, and the vastness of Pietersembos. The steep edge of the Kempish Plateau means there is sometimes a considerable climb.
Extensive description CloseIn the Hoge Kempen National Park, 10 walking routes have been awarded the European quality label Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe, Day Walk, presented by the European Hiking Federation. These Top Trails meet strict quality requirements in terms of landscape variety, presence of natural and cultural values, signposting and infrastructure.
During this walk, you will walk along the steep edge of the Kempen Plateau. Perpendicular to this steep edge, rainwater and meltwater have carved out small valleys. Sometimes water still flows through these valleys (Asbeek, Zijpbeek), but often the water has disappeared. We then refer to this as a “dry valley”. Expect a few (challenging) climbs!
Along the way, you will also pass the Asbeek, a stream with good-quality water where special species such as brook lamprey and spring dragonfly feel at home.
