Extensive description CloseThis short hike takes you through the Pietersheim estate, with its rich medieval history visible in the Waterburcht, the castle, and the surrounding avenues. Along the route, you uniquely experience the transition from the clayey, fertile Maasvallei to the sandy, poorer Kempen. Hiking from the castle, you see how the vegetation gradually changes: the first part of the avenue runs through a typical woodland on fertile soil, where strong beeches stand and the forest floor is covered in early spring with white wood anemones and yellow lesser celandine. As you continue hiking, the soil becomes increasingly sandy and poorer, where birches, Scots pines, and bilberries thrive.
