Picturesque church villages - Beukenberg - green - 4,6 km
This short hike combines Roman landscape heritage (an aqueduct, burial mound, and city walls) with heritage from the 17th and 18th centuries: the Betho castle estate.
Extensive description CloseThe Romans left their mark not only on the town center of Tongeren. Even in the wider surroundings, you can still find traces in the landscape from Roman times. An apparently natural ridge (the Beukenberg) that you hike over is a monumental earthen structure that was part of the aqueduct supplying water to the Roman city of Tongeren. You pass a Roman burial mound and remaining sections of the city walls from the 2nd century. Furthermore, the castle estate of Betho is on the itinerary, and you hike through characteristic Haspengouw landscapes with rolling fields, meadows, orchards, and holloways.
