Extensive description CloseThis 9.7 km route introduces you to the Molenplas in Stevensweert, situated opposite the Hompesche Molen. At the start of the route, the viewpoint offers a magnificent panoramic view of the entire area.
You’ll walk along banks rich in flowers and herbs, where Konik horses and Galloway cattle love to graze. They lend a hand to the nature conservation organisation Natuurmonumenten in maintaining this special natural area.
Many rare bird species also call this place home. Prick up your ears and you might just spot a blackcap or a lark! Or try to spot them from the birdwatching point. You’ll walk across the water via stepping stones and then past no fewer than two monumental trees!
The route also takes you to the former Walburg castle estate, right by the River Maas opposite the Belgian town of Ophoven. Here, the site’s historic layout has been restored through planting and footpaths. You can also enjoy the view of the River Maas and the Ophoven–Ohé en Laak ferry from a 10-metre-high observation tower.
At the end of your walk, you can take a break at the Hompesche Molen. As you can see, this relatively short route has a lot to offer. No wonder the ‘Deutsches Wanderinstitut’ has awarded it its ‘Premium Route’ seal of approval. If you choose this loop, you’re in for a top-quality experience!
Why not venture off the beaten track here too: wandering off the path is allowed!
The standard route is 9.7 km long. In the event of high water, you can follow an alternative route around the Biltplas. This brings the total length of the route to 11.1 km.
