The orange hiking loop of the hiking area Kessenich and the Drie Eigen introduces you to the northeasternmost part of the hiking area. You will discover, among others, the Meggelveld, the Thornerbeek, and the agricultural landscape around Thorn.

Extensive description Close

You start your hike from the parking on Steegputstraat. From there, you head north along an open agricultural landscape towards the Meggelveld, a nature reserve between Thorn and Wessem. This special nature reserve was created in the 20th century when clay was extracted here on a small scale for use in the brick industry. The Meggelveld hosts a breeding colony of the grey heron, used by three hundred breeding pairs. Konik horses and Galloway cattle ensure the natural maintenance. You can follow the hiking trail here, but you can also make your own way (bushwhack). Be sure to wear boots, as the area can be very wet.
Just like along the yellow loop, you will also find several chapels along the orange hiking route. They provide a pleasant alternation between nature and culture. At the end of the route, you hike along the Thornerbeek for quite a stretch until you return to your starting point.
