Groot-Gelmen - orange - 7,9 km
This hike connects Groot- and Klein-Gelmen, two Haspengouw villages each with their own character. You enjoy beautiful views, hike through a nature reserve in the Herkvallei, and pass a holloway with a unique geological history.
Extensive description CloseIn Engelmanshoven, a holloway functions as a time machine, taking you back millions of years. At that time, South Limburg lay on the edge of a sea teeming with sponges and other marine animals. Their remains accumulated on the seabed and were compressed by other layers into limestone. In the so-called ‘geological wall on the south slope’ you can spot a soft and porous siliceous limestone that geologists named the ‘Tuffeau of Lincent.’ The bottom layer of the wall in the woodland consists of the sticky ‘Sand of Grimmertingen’ with shiny minerals. At the top, you see the finer, pale ‘Sand of Neerrepen.’
