For a long time, the Herkenrode woodlands were one of Hasselt’s best-kept secrets. This area used to be owned by the Abbey of Herkenrode, hence the name. Now hikers fully enjoy this patchwork of old and young woodland, meadows, and fields. Small landscape features such as hedges, wooded edges, pollarded trees, and ponds add extra variety. The Agency for Nature and Forest takes care of appropriate management. In spring, the spring flowers emerge from the ground. In autumn, the lush summer green gives way to warm autumn colors. Children can have fun in the large natural play area.
