The hiking area Zig and Goort is mapped out through the varied landscape between Abeek and Lossing. Woodlands, meadows and fields, low peat marshes, but especially 17 hectares of ponds with reed edges and marsh zones make this area extremely attractive. The Zig once was part of an extensive marshland along the Belgian-Dutch border. Limburgs Landschap vzw, the Flemish Land Agency, and the municipality of Kinrooi have joined forces to restore the pond area between Abeek and Lossing after it was drained and planted with poplars in the 1950s. From the bird hide at the edge of the area, you have a chance to spot one of the residents such as water rail, bluethroat, reed warbler, or in the future, osprey, bittern, and water shrew. But also for dragonflies like the emerald damselfly and the metallic sheen dragonfly, the Zig is a true paradise.
