The Two Tommen
Gallo-Roman burial mounds
Haspengouw
In total, there are no fewer than six tumuli or tommen in Gingelom. These 'two tommen' lie, just like the 'three tommen', on the territory of the village of Vorsen. From the 1st to the 4th century, hundreds of villas were built in Haspengouw. These villas were Roman agricultural estates headed by a family and some permanent laborers. Most villa owners came from the affluent middle class. It is these wealthy citizens who were buried beneath the tumuli. There were once hundreds of tumuli in Haspengouw, but today only fifteen remain. Because these burial mounds bear witness to an important chapter in history, they have been protected as monuments since 1979.
