The History of "Het Burgemeestershuis"
The building dates back to 1898 and was built as a mayor’s house for Mayor Frans van Ham. In 1957, it was sold to notary Van Duffel. During the municipal council meeting on September 5, 1995, it was decided to purchase the villa with the surrounding garden, after which the deed of purchase was signed on December 13, 1995. Renovation work started in July 1998. These works were part of a single overall project and included construction on the house, the coach house, and the kiosk. The park around the house was also redesigned. The City Council renamed the villa and the park to the well-known name The Mayor’s House and the Mayor’s Park. After the renovation, the Mayor’s House was set up to welcome tourists and served as a starting point for the tourist exploration of Lommel. From 2000 onwards, cultural events have been organized in the public park. It is also regularly used as a setting for TV recordings. Several times a year, park concerts are held, mainly featuring famous Belgian artists. From 2002, it has been managed by the cultural center and the use of the house and park was expanded. The house was often used for receptions and meetings of local political parties. The park remains open to the public, and its use remains unchanged. From 2014, a quality restaurant was housed there. ‘The lounges were transformed into a luxury restaurant in Louis XVI style.’
