The Labaerdijk

The Labaerdijk is one of the most beautiful places in Maaseik, where the city and the Meuse meet. The dyke runs along the banks of the river and offers a wide view of the Maasland nature - a place that has attracted people for centuries.

At the end of the dike stands the former Skippers' Inn De Labaer, a listed building from the first quarter of the 18th century, located close to the Meuse and the former Maaskade. The wrought-iron wall anchors still bear the dating anno 1716. This is where barges used to moor on the Meuse, and the inn was an important meeting place for Maaseik's river trade.

After all, Maaseik had a thriving river transport industry, remnants of which are still visible in the old quay at Labaer. Its original condition can still be seen in the 1845 Atlas of Neighbourhood Roads. Today, the Labaerdijk is a popular walking spot, where the river's past remains palpable in the landscape.
