The Avernassetom
Gallo-Roman burial mounds
Haspengouw
The Avernassetom towers alone above the fields of Montenaken. It is the most monumental tumulus in Gingelom. Many tumuli had become overgrown over the centuries. That is why trees and shrubs were removed so that the Avernassetom and its counterparts regained their status as landmarks in the landscape. By mowing the hills several times a year and removing the cuttings, it became a habitat for rare plants. In the never-fertilized nutrient-poor soil of the Avernassetom, we find among others small water-dropwort and rough hawkweed.
