Spotting Spring Bloomers in Limburg

When hiking, people often focus their gaze on the trail or the horizon. This spring, however, it pays off to occasionally look a little lower, because along many routes the first spring bloomers are already flowering: small in size, but great in color and atmosphere.

Think of lady's smock, yellow dead-nettle, or cowslip, but also March violet, wild daffodil, cowslip, or marsh marigold can surprise you along the way.

Curious about where you have the best chance to spot these spring colors? Here you will find hiking tips to discover the most beautiful places and fully get into the spring mood.

Overbroek-Egoven

Yellow Floral Splendor in Gelinden

In early spring, the nature reserve Overbroek in Gelinden steals the show with the wild daffodil and marsh marigold, soon followed by the cowslip.

Atop the Land van Zuyl, a rich calcareous grassland, you have a beautiful view. Here, from the Herk, you are situated 60m to 100m above sea level.

Spotting Wood Anemones in Pietersheim

Nowhere can you experience the transition from the silty and fertile Maasvallei to the sandy and poor Kempen as clearly as in the domain of Pietersheim. Hiking from the castle, you see the vegetation change. The first part of the avenue runs through a typical woodland on fertile soil. The beeches grow vigorously here, and in early spring, the white wood anemones and yellow lesser celandines adorn the forest floor.

Slanke sleutelbloem

Fairy Tale Forest in Nietelbroeken

Nietelbroeken is a humid area in the Mombeekvallei, on the border between Diepenbeek and Kortessem. If you hike into the old woodland, you can enjoy the colorful spring flowers in spring such as yellow dead-nettle, narrow cowslip, and March violet. The photogenic woodland is more than worthy of the name 'the fairy tale forest' during this period.

Special woodland in Leut

The Kraaienbosje is a special woodland reserve. It is the only elm-ash woodland in Flanders and is barely 1 hectare in size. In spring, the forest floor is strewn with wood anemone, snowdrop, and spotted arum. Typical for this forest type are also spotted dead-nettle, dog's-foot grass, and finger helleborine.
