Venture into the Limburg woodlands during Forest Week
From October 5 to 12 it is Forest Week, and we have quite a lot of it in Limburg. We have listed a number of unmissable forest hikes.
Hornebos in Haspengouw
The Hornebos is a beautiful hidden woodland in Haspengouw that was once part of the castle estate of Bovelingen. On the red hiking route of 8 km, you will see the results of the efforts to restore the woodland to its former glory and immerse yourself in holloways before discovering the surrounding villages on the plateau.
Laurabossen in Unesco Mens & Biosphere Reserve KempenBroek
The blue route (7 km) in Laurabossen offers a nice variety between woodland and open field. The forest mainly consists of Scots pine, planted around 1900 for mining purposes. This forest is also gradually being transformed into a more species-rich and natural forest.
Mountain hiking in Voeren
Want a bit more? In Voeren, the highest municipality in Flanders, you can link together a challenging 20 km route via the node network. Here the woodlands steal the show in every season: you will find the eternal green of the conifers, but even more color variations from deciduous woodlands that each season show their own shades...
Kattevennen in Nationaal Park Hoge Kempen
Kattevennen is the woodland par excellence in Nationaal Park Hoge Kempen, consisting mainly of pine forests. The blue route guides you on a 7 km hike. Along the way, you pass a special holloway, which was created by the excavation of gravel around 1870.
Hiking Area Leut in RivierPark Maasvallei
In RivierPark Maasvallei you will find very little woodland. Yet you can also go on nice hikes here in the theme of ‘Week of the Forest’. The red loop in the hiking area Leut, for example. A sturdy hike of 14 km through the floodplains of the Maas, the charming village and castle park of Leut. This hike also takes you to Eisden, where you pass along the treetop path. Here you literally hike through the tops of the trees…
Koersels Kapelleke in the Valley of the Zwarte Beek
Immerse yourself in the vast woodlands around Koersels Kapelleke. Along the way, you will also encounter some heathland remnants and continental dunes. Be sure to climb the nearly 30-meter-high viewing tower from where you can look out over the typical Kempen landscape. Beware, during wet periods the forest trails are often muddy.
Kattenbos in Nationaal Park Bosland
Hengelhoef - Ten Haagdoorn in De Wijers
