Smeetshof - Wijffelterbroek - brown - 3,9 km
In the hiking area Smeetshof-Wijffelterbroek, you literally cross borders. You have a view of the varied grazing zone of the Smeetshof on one side and the Wijffelterbroek on the other.
Extensive description CloseThis short hike on paved roads runs partly along the Lossing. You hike past an open marshland and field landscapes. You also pass the Kreielerbos and the open landscape around the Smeetshoeve. The oak avenue behind the Smeetshoeve is very special. The American oaks have seen better days but are a source of life for bats.
Did you know that the Smeetshof used to be part of a 5,000-hectare border marsh together with the Dutch Wijffelterbroek? The landscape was extensively cultivated at the end of the last century. In 2003, restoration of the marsh began. The Smeetshof nature development project created new marsh areas, heathland restoration, ponds with amphibians, and wet and dry grasslands with scattered groves. Vantage points, bird hides, and boardwalks give you a unique view of this surprising part of KempenBroek. You hike between Belgium and the Netherlands, among woodlands, marshes, meadows, and streams.
