In the outskirts of Genk lies the peaceful Schemmersberg-Zonhoverheide walking area: a 311-hectare landscape of heathland, dunes, and forests.

Extensive description Close

In the 1960s, wet sand was extracted here for sand asphalt, which explains the name “Wetzandstraat” (Wet Sand Street). The sand pit in the area is a silent reminder of that former sand quarry. After sand extraction ceased, nature was given free rein, allowing the area to develop into a valuable habitat for several rare and special species. The sand pit evolved into a playful place with drifting sand, bunt grass, and heathland.
