Kessenich and the Drie Eigen - yellow - 6,4 km
The yellow hiking loop of the hiking area Kessenich and the Drie Eigen introduces you to the historic town of Thorn and its surroundings. The Vijverbroek, the Thornerbeek, and the Itterbeek are just a few of the highlights along the way.
Extensive description CloseYou start your hike from the parking on Steegputstraat. From there, you head straight to the edge of Thorn and pass along the Thornerbeek (southern direction). Then you hike a long stretch along the Itterbeek, which also introduces you to the Vijverbroek, a nature reserve of inestimable value in the heart of this hiking area. In the Middle Ages, the Vijverbroek formed an important part of the ‘common’ grounds between Kessenich, Neeritter, and Thorn. Shepherds and cowherds from these three villages could let their animals graze here. People also came here for firewood and useful wood, as well as for small-scale turf cutting.
Further along the route, you will encounter a number of chapels. They guide the way through the agricultural landscape east of the white town of Thorn and back to your starting point. Have some time left? Then be sure to explore the narrow, winding streets of Thorn to discover more about the remarkable history of this ‘white town’.
