In den Brand - blue - 4,4 km
The area ‘In den Brand’ once formed a transition zone between the inhabited Hechtel and the vast landduin and heathland area to the west. Over the years, this area was wooded to meet the demand for wood from mining.
Extensive description CloseThe dune area owes its name to the timber harvesting; in the past, the people of Hechtel-Eksel came here to collect their firewood. Today, the hiking routes offer a breathtaking journey through the largest sandbox in Flanders, past high dunes and through beautiful deciduous woodlands.
Children can play to their heart's content in the sand or climb wooden giant insects.
Dogs are of course welcome in this hiking area, provided they are leashed. Want to let your dog run free for a while? There is a 2-hectare dog park, fully fenced and located in a piece of woodland near the dunes of 'In den Brand'. There are separate zones for large and small dogs.
After all that hiking, you can head to the large picnic area at the starting point to satisfy your hunger while enjoying the greenery. At the picnic place, you will find fun wooden play equipment in the shape of insects found in the area. Get acquainted with the green sand beetle, the bastard sand beetle, the red wood ant, and the heath butterfly.
