Aldeneik - yellow - 10,6 km
The yellow loop in the hiking area Aldeneik shows you some of the most beautiful spots in Aldeneik, Maaseik, and Heppeneert. A nice combination of nature and culture with some stunning views over the Maas along the way.
Extensive description CloseDuring this hike, you will get acquainted with the wondrous past of this charming Maasdorpje. Street names, buildings, and monuments take you back to the time when Harlindis and Relindis, daughters of Adelhard and Grinnara, performed various miracles. They founded a monastic community and were visited by the missionary bishop Willibrordus. In 870, Harlindis and Relindis were canonized. Their relics are still venerated to this day.
Further along the route, you will discover the recreation area Heerenlaak and pass through the city center of Maaseik. Here, too, history is strongly felt. In the center of the market square, you will encounter the best-known Maaseikenaren, Jan and Hubert Van Eyck. You will continue hiking to Heppeneert, a small hamlet of Maaseik with the best-preserved floodplains along the Maas in terms of relief and parcel layout. Religion also plays an important role here.
Since 1883, Heppeneert has been an important pilgrimage site where Mary is venerated as Our Lady of Rest.
